Latin America and the Caribbean

Between 2000 and 2006 privatization value in Latin America and the Caribbean region amounted to almost $25 billion, or 9 percent of the total for all regions, generated from 103 transactions. The region’s share of the total fell from almost 60 percent in the 1990s to under 1 percent by 2003. After 2003, dwindling political will to privatize more sectors combined with re-nationalization movements in some countries, contributed to further weakness, with the regional share standing at just 2 percent in 2005. In 2006, however, activity picked up and the region nearly tripled its values to US$3.5 billion and increased its global share to 3 percent.
