Sub-Saharan Africa

Sub-Saharan Africa raised over $8 billion between 2000 and 2006, representing 3 percent of the total for developing countries. With 189 transactions, the region had the third-highest number of transactions behind Europe and Central Asia and East Asia and the Pacific. But 70 percent of the transactions involved firms valued at $25 million or less. While 27 countries in the region were engaged in privatization, Nigeria, South Africa, and Burkina Faso accounted for 75 percent of the value over the entire time period. Since 2003, Nigeria has emerged as the single biggest contributor, accounting for 62 percent of the region’s value in recent years.
